Labor organizing and worker protection

I will continue to join picket lines, as I have with UNITE HERE Local 2, AFSCME Local 3299, and striking teachers in Oakland. I will support EFCA, as well as Medicare for All, which was cited by UNITE HERE’s local research director as the leading policy priority of the labor movement. These movements are built by representing the interests of the rank & file, rather than telling the leadership that they have to settle for my deference to corporate rule.

Support unions and unionization efforts - Protecting the Right to Organize Act of 2019 (HR 2474) (Bobby Scott)

I support the Employee Free Choice Act, which would dramatically level the playing field confronted by workers seeking to establish unions. I’d also support Medicare for All, which multiple labor leaders have identified as their top priority. Finally, I’d continue to show active solidarity by participating in pickets, as I and our campaign team and volunteers have done with Unite Here Local 2 when on strike from Marriott, AFSCME Local 3299 when striking from UC-SF, ILWU when unioning the workforce at Anchor Steam Brewery, and Gig Workers Rising during the Uber & Lyft strike.

Participation in organized labor has catastrophically fallen over the past generation, which the PRO could help address by allowing workers to form unions without inviting employer retaliation.

Yes. This bill would overturn the Supreme Court’s dangerous decision in Vance v. Ball State University, which arbitrarily limited the set of supervisors whose acts could provide the basis for a claim of workplace harassment.

Domestic Workers Bill of Rights Act of 2019 (HR 3760) (Jayapal)

Yes. Domestic workers are some of the most vulnerable workers in our economy, and are especially in need of workplace protections, collective bargaining opportunities, and the other benefits of unionization.
